Use these on me. Use them on everyone else you are considering. They are ordered so that the uncomfortable ones come last, after you have already learned enough from the first four to know whether to keep going.
1. Show me the Search Console data, not a ranking screenshot
Rank tracking tools can be filtered, dated and cropped. Search Console is Google's own record of impressions and clicks and it cannot be edited. Ask for a shared screen on a live property. An expert who has done the work will find this the easiest question of the call.
2. Who will own the accounts?
Your Google Ads account, Analytics property, Search Console property and Google Business Profile should be created under your ownership, with the agency granted access. If any of them sits inside the agency's account, you cannot leave without losing your history. Ask specifically what happens on the day you terminate.
3. How many accounts does the person on my account currently handle?
This is the number that determines quality and almost nobody asks it. Under six is genuine attention. Ten to fifteen is a checklist. Over twenty is a report generator with a human name attached. Ask for the number this month, not the policy.
4. Tell me about a client where it did not work
Everyone has them. An expert will name the situation, the wrong call they made, and what they changed afterwards. Anyone who claims a perfect record is either new or lying, and both are expensive in different ways.
5. What would you refuse to do for me?
A specialist has boundaries: no bought links, no doorway pages for every suburb, no reporting on average position, no guarantees. If someone will do anything you ask, you are not hiring judgement, you are hiring hands, and you should pay hands rates.
6. Walk me through the search terms report
For anyone running your Google Ads, this is the single most revealing request you can make. The search terms report shows what people actually typed. If they cannot immediately explain which queries they cut last week and why, nobody has been reading it, and you have been paying for the queries they did not cut.
7. Can I speak to a current client, not a former one?
Testimonials are typed by whoever runs the website. A live call with a client who is currently paying is a different order of evidence, and it is the only one that is difficult to arrange if the work is not good. Ask for one in your own market.
