Should you opt out of Google's AI Overviews?

For most service businesses, no. Stay included unless you have a specific commercial reason to withdraw your content. An HVAC contractor, electrician or plumber needs customers to discover the business, judge whether it fits and get in touch. Removing a route to discovery needs more justification than frustration with AI-generated answers.

Publishers may face a different calculation. If the information itself is the product, a summary can satisfy the reader without a visit. Here is what the switch does, and how to decide.

What Google's new Search Console switch does

Google says its Search generative AI control became available to all websites worldwide on 31 August 2026. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover.

ChoiceEffect
IncludeYour links and content stay eligible for these features; inclusion is not guaranteed
ExcludeYour links and content are kept out of the covered features, so you get no impressions or traffic from them
InheritThe property follows the setting of its closest parent property, by default the domain property

Google says the choice is not used as a ranking or inclusion signal for other parts of Search. It does not control AI training, and it does not override separate participation in services such as Merchant Center or Google Ads. Excluding your site also leaves other websites' content available, so it does not remove every discussion of your business from AI answers.

How to opt out of AI Overviews

In the Search Console property, open Settings → Search generative AI and choose the exclusion option.

Check parent and child properties before changing anything. A URL-prefix property inherits from its closest parent by default, and the owner of a child property can override what it inherits. Google says exclusion generally takes a few days, with some content taking longer because of caching.

Why a contractor should usually stay included

A homeowner asking about a failing air conditioner may need two things: an explanation, and someone who can fix it. An answer can provide the explanation. It cannot carry out the repair.

That is the commercial distinction for a service business. Your website helps sell a service delivered somewhere else. An answer that introduces your company can still lead to a booking, even if the customer never reads every paragraph you wrote. This is a business judgement, not a claim that AI exposure always produces leads.

Before opting out, ask:

  • Are suitable customers discovering us through AI-assisted searches?
  • Is the information about our services accurate?
  • Are those enquiries becoming booked work?
  • What specific harm would exclusion solve?

"AI answers might reduce clicks" is a concern worth investigating. On its own, it is not evidence that withdrawing will improve your results.

Who might reasonably consider opting out?

A publisher selling access to detailed research has a different problem from a contractor publishing an installation guide.

Business situationQuestion to investigate
Subscription publicationAre summaries replacing visits that would otherwise support subscriptions?
Advertising-funded publisherIs lost readership materially affecting revenue?
Research or information productDoes the generated answer reproduce enough value to reduce demand for the original?
Business with content-licensing arrangementsIs inclusion consistent with its commercial commitments?

These are reasons to investigate, not automatic reasons to opt out. A publisher can lose valuable discovery by withdrawing too, so the decision needs evidence about its audience and revenue model.

Measure before changing the setting

Set a baseline covering visibility, enquiries and completed business: Search Console for AI visibility, GA4 for identifiable assistant referrals, and your CRM for what customers say. Our guide to measuring AI search traffic in GA4 and Search Console explains how to keep those measurements separate.

Add "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" to your enquiry form's source question, with room for detail. For Google's AI results, customers may simply remember "Google", so do not expect perfect self-reporting.

If you test exclusion, write down the reason, the affected properties, the date and how you will judge success. Do not change your advertising, website and pricing at the same time. For seasonal businesses, compare equivalent demand periods: a drop in HVAC enquiries after peak summer does not show that a Search Console setting caused it.

Ranking neutrality is not commercial neutrality

A setting can leave your ordinary rankings untouched and still change how customers come across your business. Equally, more exposure does not automatically mean more revenue.

Make the decision on qualified enquiries and completed jobs, supported by the visibility data. If those outcomes are not measured reliably, fix conversion tracking first.

Our recommendation for service businesses: stay included, check how your business is represented, and measure the enquiries. Consider exclusion when you can name the problem it is meant to solve and explain how you will judge the result.
